Homemade Play Dough Recipe

Making homemade play dough is something I vividly remember playing with as a kid. Mom would make this from items in the pantry, in multiple colours and my brother and I would use cookie cutters to make different shapes or sculpt the dough into our version of figurines. I hope this helps bring a little excitement to the household and get the kiddos out of an "I'm bored" phase.

Homemade Play Dough Recipe

1 cup all purpose flour (whole wheat will work as well)

2/3 cup table salt

2 tsp cream of tartar (cornstarch works as a substitute)

1 cup lukewarm water

1 tbsp vegetable oil or coconut oil (I use coconut oil)

Your choice of food colouring

Combine the flour, table salt and cream of tartar in a large saucepan. Bring your stove top heat to medium.

(I use a 5 quart saucepan for the added space but it doesn't need to be that big).

Bring 1 cup of water to a boil and pour it into a liquid measuring cup. Measure out 1 tbsp of coconut oil. Dunk the tbsp of coconut oil into the hot water, it will melt into the water and combine nicely. If you are wanting all of your play dough one colour then put a few drops of food colouring into the water/oil mix and stir.

Once the dry mix is warm in the saucepan, add the oil and water mix to it. You will need to stir everything together quickly. It will start off dry and lumpy and as you stir start to become doughy. If you find the mix is too dry, add a touch of water. Take the saucepan off the heat. You should be able to take the dough mix out of the saucepan, flip the pan upside down and let it drop to the counter. Start kneading it to make sure all the ingredients have combined together nicely.

If you want the dough to cool off before the kids get to it, throw it into a sealed ziploc bag or glass container and throw it in the fridge. When the kids get restless just grab it out of the fridge... when they're done, re-seal and pop it into the fridge.
